Our beginner-friendly classes are designed to teach fundamentals from the ground up, and our instructors excel at meeting students where they are. I'm not in great shape. Should I get fit before starting?

Not at all, BJJ will get you in shape! Many of our most successful students started their fitness journey on our mats. Our beginner classes are designed to accommodate all fitness levels, and you can work at your own pace. You'll be surprised how quickly your cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility improve through regular training. The best time to start is now, exactly as you are.

Is BJJ safe? Will I get hurt?

BJJ is one of the safest martial arts when practiced properly. Unlike striking arts, there's no punching or kicking, which significantly reduces injury risk. We emphasize controlled technique, tap-early culture (immediately signaling when caught in a submission), and training with awareness of your partner's safety. Minor bumps and bruises can occur as with any physical activity, but serious injuries are rare when students follow instruction and train responsibly.

What's the difference between gi and no-gi classes?

Gi classes use the traditional BJJ kimono (jacket and pants), which allows for grips on the collar and sleeves, creating a more technical and methodical pace. No-gi classes are done in rash guards and shorts without the gi, making it faster-paced and more slippery, with different grip and control strategies.

Both styles complement each other beautifully, and we recommend training both for well-rounded skills.

How does the belt ranking system work?

BJJ uses a colored belt system to indicate skill progression.
Kids belt go from White >> Gray >> Yellow >> Orange >> Green. With each belt typically taking 8-12 months based on training schedule.


After 16+ & Adults progress through
White >> Blue >> Purple >> Brown >> Black belt. With each belt typically taking 1-3 years of consistent training (though this varies widely based on training frequency and individual progression).

Promotions are earned through demonstrated technical knowledge, mat time, and character development, not testing fees. The journey is long and rewarding, with each belt representing genuine skill advancement.
